These famous stones which sound!

The stones which sound already made some articles in the specialized press. Often called wrongly magnetite, we made some analyze three.

Sometimes of color different, they have all the same characteristic: to make deviate the needle of a compass when one passes the latter to the top!

We thus forwarded three taken samples to the same place but of color and nonidentical size.

The sample is presented in the form of stones of relatively low density (light compared to the size of flint stones). Crushed and reduced it powders some is of color brown and remarkable by its magnetic property. Apart from native iron and pyrites in which iron combines with a by-product; We are in the presence of a characteristic Iron oxide by its brown color which makes think of hydrated brown hematite also called Limonite (formula Fe2 O3 2HÒ).

On a purely informative basis, the layer of iron are numerous in the world.
Most significant are in the United States (higher Lake content of iron from approximately 50%, that of the Appalachian Mountains from 35 to 40%). Those of Russia and Sweden are richest in the world, their content borders 60 à.70%. In France that of Lorraine titrates from 28 to 40%.

Here thus analysis chemical of what a stone contains which sounds, each value is expressed as a percentage:

Silica (SiO2)

:

Alumina (AlÒ3)

:

13%

Iron (Fe2 O3)

:

49,65%

Titanium (TiO2)

:

Calcium (CaO)

:

0,48%

Magnesium (MgO)

:

0,23%

Sodium (NaÒ)

:

0,55%

POTASSIUM (KÒ)

:

1,80%

SULPHATES (SO3)

:

PHOSPHATES(PÒ5)

:

TOTAL CARBON (C)

:

Copper (CuO)

Chlorides (Cl)

ZINC(ZnO)

CONCLUSION:

The sample called " stones which sound " or Hot Rocks is an Ferro-Silico-Aluminate it uses to 81% the total composition, with 49, Iron oxide 65% is pure Iron 34,72%. The remainder of the elements is in a natural state in the form of trace elements. Carbon (0,173%) is of organic origin.

What is curious it is that the chemical analysis precisely recuts the diagnosis of our Geologist: organic origin, color varying of the red to brown thus the presence of Iron in great quantity.

Not astonishing that these small stones disturb our apparatuses, preventing them from functioning correctly when they are close to metal objects. Not astonishing either to find on certain apparatuses a Hot-Rock'n'rolls mode in order to detect them. And also to detect what there is around.
