DETECTION AND STATISTICS

(comparative Study of the various types of metal objects found with the detector of metals according to their frequency and their place of invention)

In this study, we will draw up statistics starting from a sample of several thousands of isolated lucky finds, except archeological sites and historical, in the following places:

- plowed fields
- meadows
- wood
- paths and paths

Types of apparatuses used:

- model Fisher 1265-X. Head of detection 27 cm in diameter spider. Degree of discrimination regulated to 4,5 out of 10.

-
Tesoro Silver model Sabres more. Head standard 20 cm in diameter. Degree of discrimination regulated to 3,5 out of 10.

A first part will be devoted to the analysis of the various types and quantity of coins found in the quoted places.

One second part will correlate all the objects detected with the place of their discovery and the time of excavation.

A third part will include/understand practical data inherent in the apparatuses (traversed and detected surface, scanning rate, etc...).

The fourth part, which will be the synthesis of the three first, will give statistical indications to any researcher intending to prospect randomly.

I Proportion of the various categories of coins found on standard places

The use of a metal detector makes it possible to determine for each type of place the frequentation of the place according to times'.

The found currencies generally represent the passage of an individual having the part in his pocket for its period of circulation. It is easy, according to the quantity of isolated lucky finds, to know if the place were practised and with which intensity.

The domestic objects of all kinds which go on oneself and lose at the same time as the parts can indicate the sex of the individual, his row in the company and the reason of its presence when it mislaid the object.

The fields rich in isolated currencies can make think on the one hand that the owners were rich and had more parts in their pockets, but on the other hand that they could be poor and cover of the clothes perforated letting pass the few parts that they had.

How the parts and objects could be lost out of all dwellings?

- In the unspecified fields:

The work of the ploughings, the harvest and the collecting of stones oblige the peasants and their wife to be leaned. It is enough to an open or perforated pocket so that the contents flow in the furrows. Even thing for the possible hunters and walkers. However, the parts are never found gathered, éparpillement being caused by the successive ploughings. During the cleaning of the courses of farm, the manure was sometimes widespread in the fields with the currencies which s?y found.

- In wood:

The underwoods are attended by the mushroom gatherers, the hunters, the pick-ups of wood and the walkers. The discrete and bushy places are the places visited preferentially by the in love ones (the thrown clothes hastens some on the ground much more easily lose the contents of the pockets). One often finds the parts gathered by cluster from 2 to 6, seldom in their porte-monnaie.

- On the paths and paths:

At the time of the jogging, ballades, when people s?assoient at the edge to rest...

- In the meadows:

At the time of the picnics, roulades in grass, of mowings... The parts are sometimes gathered.

Certain places were not taken into account in this study, although parts can be found there, for lack of interest or sufficient lucky finds to be able to analyze them. It is the case of the ski pistes, the ranges, the rivers, the gardens, the caves, the parks, and the dwellings.

The silver moneys of all times are gathered in only one category, as well as the parts in balk...

The " Gallo-Roman " category includes/understands the Gallic and Roman currencies

champs.gif (31841 octets)

The most current parts to find in the fields are the Black poplars of France (1 part out of 4), Double the tournaments (1 out of 5). Then the parts come from the 20
2nd century and those of Napoleon III (1 out of 10).

bois.gif (27926 octets)

For wood, 1 part out of 5 is either Double Tournaments, or a Black poplar of France, or a part of first half of the 20
2ndcentury; 1 part out of 10 is current.

chemins.gif (27168 octets)

On the paths, 1 part out of 3 is first half of the 202ndcentury or current; 1 out of 10 is of Napoleon III.

prairies.gif (23205 octets)

In the meadows, 1 part out of 3 is first half of the 202nd century, 1 out of 4 is current and 1 out of 6 is of Napoleon III.

Comments:

- In the paths and the meadows one finds 2 times more parts of the 202nd century than in wood and 6 times more than in the fields.

- the fields and wood contain 4 times more Double Tournaments and of Black poplar of France that in the meadows and the paths.

- One finds 2 times more Napoleon III in the paths and the meadows that in the fields and wood.

- to hope to find parts in balk (alloy silver-copper) it is to better specialize in the fields and wood.

- On the other hand, there is as much chance to find a silver coin in all the quoted places; approximately 1 part out of 50 found.

- Better is worth not too much not to hope to find a gold coin as of the first output (nor even in the first year!). Indeed, one finds 1 gold coin all the 1000! (however this value is based on 3 found parts d?or, which is insufficient to be reliable statistically).
